Give him credit, Alibama said preparing for the debates was a drag and his performance in Denver certainly revealed his lack of engagement in the process. Even Al Gore had to go out on a limb and blame lack of oxygen for his party leader's lackluster, even diffident performance. Alibama may be ahead in a few swing states but someone should tell him that in the nation's current political mood his leads could evaporate overnight. Unfortunately, campaigning for President in the age of mass media has become largely a matter of managing perceptions [below]. If undecided voters come to the conclusion that Alibama is not overly interested in living in the bubble for four more years while Mitt channels the Gipper, they are willing to put in
the substitute.
